Refurbishment of ‘The Glebe’

‘The Glebe’ is an Irish neo-gothic style stone cottage which was once used as a former gatehouse associated with the neighbouring Roebuck Castle. The architectural similarities between the two buildings (‘The Glebe’ and Roebuck Castle) include decorative eaves, dressed stone quoins, and pointed arched openings on both gables.

The house has been used periodically over the years for different purposes but now in order to return it to its original use as a domestic dwelling, the university has carried out extensive refurbishments and improvements.

Works have included the complete renovation of the building interior, the construction of a new granite wall, and associated landscaping.  The new wall will divert the flow of pedestrian traffic and afford privacy to the ground floor accommodation, without affecting the integrity of the house itself.

The restoration works have ensured that the house can once again be used as a dwelling, and have enhanced not only the character of the house itself, but also the immediate area.
The University has carried out the works in accordance with good conservation practice.

The Glebe offers accommodation for University academics on short term leases, and is managed by the Conference and Commercial Office.
