Developments at the National Virus Reference Laboratory

The National Virus Reference Laboratory (NVRL) which was built in 1990 provides a state-of-the-art national diagnostic and reference service for clinicians investigating virus infections.

In order to ensure the provision of a dynamic and pro-active laboratory, the NVRL constantly embraces new technologies and methodologies in keeping with its role as a reference laboratory.

A recently completed development by NBK Architects includes a new reception area and an extensive open-plan streamlined General Serology process laboratory. Future-proofing of this development has ensured that the laboratory has been built with the flexibility to facilitate increased automation and future service demands.

Ongoing works at the NVRL are being carried out by Arup and NBK Architects who are excavating the under croft of the building in order to use it as a large multi-purpose storage location including walk-in chill and freezer rooms.

The new storage facilities will free up space on the above floors allowing for the provision of additional office and wet lab space.
