CLARITY CSET established in UCD Science Centre (North)

The creation and exchange of knowledge is the raison d’etre for the modern university. Promoting collaboration and the mutually beneficial sharing of information and resources between staff, students, industry and other third level institutions is a cornerstone for the development of research and innovation.

CLARITY was established as a Centre for Science, Engineering and Technology (CSET) in April 2008. Funded by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), it acts as a partnership between University College Dublin and Dublin City University, and is supported by research at the Tyndall National Institute Cork. CLARITY investigates the integration of sensor data from the physical world with sophisticated information processing and artificial intelligence techniques from computer science. This ground breaking research focuses on ‘Sensor Web’ technologies, which capture the intersection between two important research areas – Adaptive Sensing and Information Discovery.

In March 2009, CLARITY moved into state-of-the-art refurbished facilities in the UCD Science Centre (North) building. This new initiative now serves as a true national centre for multi-disciplinary research, and takes full advantage of existing infrastructure investments at University College Dublin.

Funded under the HEA Research Facilities Enhancement Scheme, renovation works to the ground floor of the building included the provision of intensive write-up and office based research accommodation designed primarily to support ICT type activity. Hot desk facilities are also available to support visiting researchers and collaboration with partner companies, involving personnel from companies and other institutions working from time to time in the Clarity facilities.

The aim of CLARITY is to develop systems that can sense, process and analyse what is happening in the real world and respond in an appropriate manner. CLARITY intends to develop innovative new technologies of critical importance to Ireland's future industry base and contribute to improving the quality of life of people in areas such as personal health, digital media and management of our environment.
