Development of the UCD Science Centre enters next phase
"The University’s ambition to link education research and innovation more effectively will enable increasing numbers of students to convert knowledge, ideas and inventions into the development of life-enhancing products, service and policies in a manner that will enrich all aspects of social and economic life in Ireland and beyond."
Forming Global Minds: UCD Strategic Plan to 2014
De Valera first turned the sod on the original UCD Science Centre in 1962. Fifty years later and the Belfield Campus is approaching another exciting milestone as site development works are progressing well on the UCD Science Centre and the UCD Student Learning Leisure and Sports Centre. Meanwhile it is anticipated that construction of the new UCD Sutherland School of Law and Systems Biology facilities will commence over the coming months.
The UCD Science Centre development responds to national infrastructural deficits in the field of science and will work towards identifying solutions to global research challenges through the co-location of world-class scientists across different disciplines. In 2007, the University set out an ambitious €350 million phased redevelopment plan which would transform research, teaching, training and innovation facilities designed to support modern science and engineering activities.
Since then, the University has successfully developed over 13,000sq.m of new and refurbished state-of-the-art facilities designed to support scientific researchers across the fields of biopharma, nanoscience, food and health, dermatology, microbiology, physical science and computation.
Excavation and foundation works for Science Centre Phase 2 commenced in late 2011. This integrated development will incorporate 32,000sq.m of undergraduate, taught postgraduate, research, innovation and outreach accommodation, due to be complete in 2013.
