UCD Campus Development

Ongoing Energy Efficiency works on the Belfield Campus.

As part of the University’s continuous efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of the campus, improvement works have been ongoing to the Belfield District Heating system during the summer months.

The Belfield District Heating system consists of the main UCD Energy Centre and almost two kilometres of a heat distribution network serving a large proportion of campus buildings.

In recent times, a programme of works was initiated to incorporate more efficient heat generation plant in the UCD Energy Centre.

Part funded by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland under the “Better Energy Work Place” scheme, these improvements will enhance the energy efficiency of the campus infrastructure, and generate potential savings for the University in the region of €100,000 per annum.

These new developments will compliment other energy efficient heat generation systems already implemented at Belfield including a biomass boiler and combined heat and power systems (CHP). These initiatives serve to reduce both CO₂ emissions and fossil fuel dependency while contributing significantly to the creation of a sustainable healthy and living campus.

Works are due for completion later this year.
