Opening of new Childcare Facilities at Oakmount Crèche

The accessibility of high-quality child-care options close to the study and work activity is a high priority for many students and staff, and it's a vital component of an academic community that promotes improved work and home lives. The University is committed to creating a culture and environment that continually improves the available services and supports to the campus student and staff community.

The recently opened extension to the UCD Oakmount Crèche will enlarge and enhance the existing childcare facilities at Belfield. Partially funded through the National Development Plan 2007-2013 under the National Childcare Investment Programme 2006-2010, the new development now provides the Crèche with a capacity for over 100 children.

The development which will provide additional facilities for baby, toddler, playgroup, Montessori and after school activity will also include:

  • a “Magic Room” with performance stage lighting,
  • an infinity wall and integrated projection with surround sound,
  • a new baby garden and a fish tank

In accordance with the strategic objectives of the UCD Campus Development Plan 2005-2010-2015, the new facility is an Eco-friendly development designed by ABA Architects to increase light and heat efficiency in the centre with the introduction of roof solar panels, a timber frame and other sustainability measures. Building work began in late April 2009 and was completed in January 2010.

Supporting each child as an individual, acknowledging each child’s unique pattern of interests, talents and abilities, and offering learning experiences appropriate to each child’s stage of development, the new facilities will allow Crèche staff to continue provide services whereby children engage in learning experiences that enhances their progress.
