Sustainable Transport at UCD
As one of the many initiatives designed to promote sustainable modes of transport to Belfield, the UCD Bike Day will take place on Thursday 13th May.
Funded by the Department of Transport, an organised event took place recently beside the UCD lake and included:
- a free bicycle health check and advice on brakes, tyres, etc.
- various tips and advice on bicycle commuting and security issues,
- the launch of the UCD Bicycle commuting webpage,
- free entry into prize draw, and
- a free refreshment station.
Supporting the advancement of a variety of alternative modes of transport to the Campus including public transport, cycling and walking, UCD is actively developing a sustainable campus infrastructure. The University has recently completed a number of related initiatives including the following:
- the completion of the next phase of the Boundary Woodland Walk, creating a pleasant walking jogging and cycling track between Clonskeagh, Greenfield, and the UCD Chapel.
- installing additional high-security stainless steel bicycle racks at various locations across the campus including Health Sciences, the Science Centre, and the Newstead Buildings.
- the replacement of older and less secure bicycle racks adjacent to the Engineering and Materials Science Centre, James Joyce Library, and Newman Buildings.
- the introduction of monitored CCTV for bicycle parking areas is being implemented on a phased basis.
- redistributing bicycles abandoned on campus through partnership with community bikes group Rothar.
