Works to new link building commence.

Planning permission has been granted for a new link building that will be located between the Conway Institute which provides high quality cell and molecular biology laboratories and the UCD Health Sciences Centre, providing access to teaching, reading and library facilities.

Charles Institute
Proposed Charles Institute Between the UCD Health Sciences Centre and the UCD Conway Institute

The building will host the UCD Charles Institute of Dermatology, and will be a facility for research and training that will become a National and European centre of excellence. The Institute, which will be based at the heart of UCD’s research campus will become a world leader in the care of patients with skin disease.  It will attract world class interest in dermatology and will lead to better patient care through the discovery of new treatments and therapies.

The Institute’s objective will be to lead the training in dermatology at physician and specialist levels.  Located adjacent to the Health Sciences complex, the Institute will be ideally placed to train allied healthcare professionals.

Systems Biology Ireland will also be located in this new link building.  Systems Biology Ireland will train a new generation of scientists equipped with the interdisciplinary skills that transcend the traditional boundaries of the life sciences. Systems Biology Ireland will aim to address crucial questions in biology and biomedicine by the integration of novel biological experimentation and mathematical and computational methods, and will develop the dry and wet lab technologies of the future needed for the rational, quantitative analysis of biochemical cellular networks that make biological decisions.

Enabling works have commenced and will continue until October 2009. The main contract will be complete by late 2010.
