Health Sciences 3

The third phase of the development of the Health Sciences Complex will accommodate the Medical Bureau of Road Safety (MBRS).

The relocation of the MBRS to the Belfield Campus ensures the continuation of the long standing partnership (since 1971) between the Bureau and the university in the provision of a national service in the areas of forensic medicine, road traffic medicine, and road safety.  The relocation places both organisations in a prestigious and influential position within the international forensic sphere which is critical to research activity in road traffic medicine.  The techniques, knowledge and equipment required to conduct the service and research work of the Bureau will be well served by the completion of these state-of-the-art forensic facilities.

Plans for the relocation of the Forensic Laboratory from the Earlsfort Terrace Campus to the Belfield Campus have been in train since the late 1990’s. The ongoing development of the Bureau’s forensic analysis of alcohol and drugs in biological specimens from drivers suspected of intoxicated driving require detailed planning of the scientific, administrative and research requirements of a modern accredited forensic laboratory.  The recent sale of the Earlsfort Terrace facility has prompted the development of alternative accommodation at the Belfield Campus.

Building Description
The construction of new purpose-built facilities for the Medical Bureau of Road Safety at the Belfield campus forms part of the overall phased development of the Health Science Complex. Phase 3 will generate 2,200m2 of dedicated laboratory and laboratory support accommodation for the MBRS function and will enable direct access to the Health Sciences Library, the UCD School of Medicine and Medical Science and other university facilities.

The four storey building is designed to complement earlier Health Science Complex construction phases through the consistent use of external stone and glazed cladding. The new building will enable significant expansion of the current MBRS activity and ensure state-of-the-art facilities designed to support modern laboratory analysis.

Project Timeline

Construction started on Phase 3 of the Health Sciences Complex in August 2006 and the building was completed in late 2007.
