Ardmore House
Building Description
Built C. 1800, Ardmore House is a typical example of an 19th century country villa. An extension in the late 1800’s incorporated a balustraded Corinthian porch and bow ends, generating the building we see today. With two storeys over basement the villa once boasted ten bedrooms and two fine reception rooms.
Limited restoration of cornicing details has been carried out in recent years. A grand Victorian staircase still acts as the main access to the upper floor but similar to other pre-developed period house accessibility is an issue.
Current Building Use
Ardmore House is currently used to support laboratory teaching and research, an activity which is at variance with this fine building. It is proposed that the laboratory based activities will in time be relocate to the new Science Centre, a more appropriate environment which will afford access to purpose-built laboratory facilities.
Restoration Works
Ardmore house has been partially restored in order to keep its integrity while awaiting funding. In due course, the relocation of laboratory activity elsewhere will enable the refurbishment and re-instatement of Ardmore House to its former excellence. It is envisaged that the redevelopment of the house will support an activity more in keeping with a 19th century period house.
