Through our depth of expertise in ICT and our commitment to inform and transform, we have an obligation to society to translate our research into meaningful outcomes that benefit all citizens. Our efforts extend to;
SMART Project
- The basic idea of the SMART project is for engineers to work alongside patients and victims of spinal injury to produce useful and practical solutions for them that improve their independence and hence their wellbeing.

FMC2
- Team Maths 2010: A national Mathematics competition, promotes interest in Mathematics
amongst 6th Year Secondary School Students. This year, a total of 1,350
students participated in the competition. The preliminary round was organised
by the Irish Mathematics Teachers Association while the Final was organised by
UCC’s School of Mathematical Sciences. The event was sponsored by SFI-funded
research groups, The Edgeworth Centre for Financial Mathematics and FMC2,
along with the Society of Actuaries Ireland, and the School of Engineering,
UCC.
- Google
sponsored Computer Science Summer School: A
comprehensive programme is planned, which will be available to students
entering 5th and 6th year in September 2011. Students will gain insight into
life as a UCD Computer Science Student.
- FMC2
Summer School: A 5-day programme concentrating on
Finance, Mathematics and Computer Science is planned. This will be open to
students entering 5th and 6th year in September 2011 and will be linked to the
Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference 2011.
Clique
- Primary
School Workshops: Prof. Denis Shields delivered workshops to
primary school children in school computer laboratories: Applying computer
programming in biology research and computer programming practical in SCRATCH.
- Science
Shadowing Day: Dr. Michael Salter-Townshend and Gian Luca Negri
took part in UCD, Dublin’s School of CSI Science
Shadowing Day. It involved two 5th years students
shadowing Clique researchers in the workplace to get a hands-on understanding
of their daily research activities.
IRU
- The
Innovation Research Unit is involved in teaching, learning, research sharing
and Internships.
