Biography:
| Michel Schilperoord is post-doctoral fellow at UCD's newly established Innovation Research Unit IRU. He studied business econometrics at the Erasmus University Rotterdam and obtained his PhD at the same university. He is an experienced modeller and researcher in the general area of agent-based simulation. He recently completed work on a EU Tender project for which he developed a policy laboratory in silico in order to inform policymakers about optimal network structures for ICT research and innovation. His current work is concentrated on the PRTLI Innovation Policy Simulation for the Smart Economy (IPSE) project. International Research Projects While working towards his PhD in the general area of simulation and modelling of complex systems with focus on agent-based simulation, he took research posts in Ireland, Portugal and Brazil, where he developed applications of the agent-based approach. At the Institute for International Integration Studies (IIIS), Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, he extended an agent-based model of political party competition into a multi-dimensional, multi-party competition model, with applications to Irish politics and the European Parliament. In the EU Complexity and Social Science (EU-COSI) project, at the Laboratory for Agent Modelling (LabMAg) in Lisbon, Portugal, he conducted a simulation study of innovation dynamics with a case study on a science and technology park. At the Centre for Technology and Innovation Management (NITEC) in Porto Alegre, Brazil, he organised workshops for policy modelling to support integrated urban waste management, the results of which he used to outline an agent-based model. After finishing his thesis he continued his research at the Dutch Research Institute for Transitions (DRIFT), Erasmus University Rotterdam, working on the EU Methods and Tools for Integrated Sustainability Assessment (EU-MATISSE) project. Consultancy Work Before finishing his PhD he worked as a consultant in the areas of waste prevention, integrated assessment and IA modelling in Rotterdam and Delft. With a consulting firm in the domain of strategic policy advice he developed a range of innovative methods and tools designed to support national and international environmental policy. His activities for Dutch ministries and international organisations included analysis of industry sectors and clusters, screening and evaluation of complex development projects, and synthesis and presentation of science-based knowledge. |
