Biography:
| 1994-2004: Assistant Director, Met Eireann. 1968 B.Sc. in Mathematical Science. National University of Ireland (UCD). Double 1st Class Honours, Mathematics and Mathematical Physics 1969 M.Sc.(Hons) in Mathematical Science. National University of Ireland (UCD). 1982 Ph.D. in Dynamic Meteorology, University of Dublin. |
Research Interests
| Dynamic Meteorology. Numerical weather prediction. Digital Filters. Hamiltonian Mechanics. History of Meteorology. My principal research interests are dynamic meteorology, numerical weather prediction (NWP), regional climate modelling and climate variability. I have a particular interest in balance in the atmosphere. I developed the digital filtering technique, an initialization method now in widespread international use. Additional research interests include chaos in low-order Hamiltonian systems, wave triad resonance in fluids, and the three-body problem in astronomy. I have a deep interest in the history of numerical weather prediction, and my book on the work of Lewis Fry Richardson and the origins and evolution of NWP was published by Cambridge University Press in 2006. It is entitled: "Richardson's Dream: the Emergence of Scientific Weather Forecasting". |
