"This movie shows the result of our cyclone tracking algorithm, applied to surface pressure data from December 1989 - March 1990. The cyclone tracking algorithm first identifies cyclones in the pressure field at each time-step and then connects these centres to form cyclone tracks. The dots represent the centre of each cyclone and the boundary of the cyclone is indicated by a solid line enclosing the centre. The cyclones are tracked at 6 hour intervals; in displaying the storm track at a given point, the centre of the cyclone at each 6 hour interval leading to the present time-step is displayed and joined by a line. The cyclone track indicated in this manner persists until the death of that cyclone. Our cyclone tracking algorithm allows us to automate the process of searching for cyclones and specifically extreme cyclones from the period 1989-2009 (the period for which we have high resolution data over the Northern Hemisphere). We can then study these tracks to gain a better understanding of how these extreme cyclones form and measure their statistics."
