Ann O’Connell
Started her PhD in October 2010 when she joined CBNI. Her research focuses on nanoparticle dispersions and surface characterisation of nanoparticles. Her work focused initially on developing protocols for dispersions of materials such SiO2 and Bismuth. Her overall research focus is to transfer the surface characterisation techniques used in the semiconductor industry to characterise detailed reactions on the nanomaterial surfaces throughout the life-cycle of the material. Ann is funded through the EPA Strive program (2008-EH-MS-5-S3).
She graduated with a BSc in Applied Chemistry and a MSc in Environmental Science. Ann worked with Intel Corporation for 15 years, including 9 years in the laboratory, initially in Materials Analysis and then transferring to Chemical analysis where she set-up a world class Chemical Analysis Laboratory utilising techniques such as ICP-MS. Ann then moved into a senior process integration role, driving key process control activities and process changes. In 2008 Ann decided to return to education to further her knowledge in research with a specific interest in Environmental nanotechnology. Within the CBNI group Ann chairs the project office meetings for Qnano.
