Laura Cooke

Joined the Centre for BioNano-Interactions (CBNI) as a Masters student in February 2012 and is funded by two EU projects.

During her research Laura aims to assess the potential environmental impacts of different classes of nanoparticles using the model organism, Zebrafish (Danio rerio). Her work will involve investigating the uptake, developmental impact and potential toxicity of nanoparticles, which is of key interest to understanding the safety issues connected to numerous nanomaterials that are introduced in industrial and consumer products, and developed for biomedical applications. She will also aim to develop a platform for high throughput screening of nanomaterial toxicity and will characterise the abnormalities (if any) caused by these nanomaterials.

Laura graduated second highest in her class from Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) with an Upper Second Class Honour (2:1) in Toxicology. She was also the only student in her class to achieve a First Class Honour for her Thesis “The Validation of an Enzyme Immunoassay Kit for the Detection of Ethinylestradiol”. This project was done externally at The Irish Equine Centre, Johnstown, County Kildare.
