Laurence Fitzpatrick
first joined the Centre for BioNano Interactions as a visiting student in February 2011 from Kevin Street, DIT. During which time he worked closely with Dr. Peter Sandin, which resulted in a publication in ACS Nano in January 2012, for his efforts he was awarded a second author position.
He returned to DIT to complete his bachelors and graduated with a second class honours B.Sc in Science with Nanotechnology (Physics Major) in October 2012. His final year project was carried out in the NanoLab facility in the FOCAS Institute in DIT. It focused on exploring the structure and physicochemical properties of Nano-C60 and single walled carbon nanotube aqueous solutions and possible cytotoxic effects, and was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Gordon Chambers.
Laurence returned to the group as a Ph.D. student in September 2012 and is funded by the Irish Research Council under the EMBARK Initiative. His main interests are bio-nanoparticle imaging in cells and tissues and his work focuses on what drives a sub-population of nanoparticles to “unexpected places” within cells, as well as different internalization rates for different sub-populations of particles. In order to do so, he is mainly working with fluorescent microscopy.
