Dr. Marco Monopoli

joined the centre for BioNano Interactions in November 2008 as a Postdoctoral fellow, working closely with Professor Giuliano Elia in the UCD Mass Spectrometry Resource. His project aims to develop a workflow for the characterization and quantification of nanoparticle protein coronas using both gel based and off-gel methodologies. He is also involved in the design of smart nanoparticles whose surface has been functionalized in order to control their behaviour in biological fluid and to “direct” their interactions with the proteins in their environment (eg. Plasma proteins.  He is also working on characterization of  characterise the proteome of cells after they have been incubated with nanoparticles under different conditions.

Marco is funded through the HEA PRTLI cycle 4 programme INSPIRE.

Marco graduated in 2005 with an M.Sc. from Universitá degli studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia in Biotecnologie Farmaceutiche and performed his thesis project in the laboratory of Professor Ciaran Regan in UCD in the field of Neuroscience.  He undertook a PhD in Neuroscience with Dr. Keith Murphy in the Applied Neurotherapeutics Research Group (ANRG) in UCD a Science Foundation Ireland Strategic Research Cluster where he studied protein changes associated with learning and memory events in rats using proteomic approaches.
