Mr Tiago dos Santos

joined the School of Chemistry and Chemical Biology as a PhD student in September 2006. Tiago works closely with Dr. Anna Salvati on this project, is focused on understanding the interactions of different sized nanoparticles with cells, in order to elucidate the spatio-temporal aspects and the mechanisms of endocytosis update of nanoparticles into the cell. In order to quantify and track the particles inside cells, he is working mainly with fluorescence microscopy (confocal and Live cell imaging) and flow cytometry. He is working with an extended panel of cell lines, including HeLa, A549, 1321N1, HcMECD3 and Raw264.7. Tiago was funded by an SFI RFP grant.

After a degree in Industrial Chemistry at the University of Coimbra in Portugal, he has developed a special interest in the field of Colloids and Polymers, in which he has studied the interactions between nonionic vesicles and Hydrophobically modified Polyethylene glycol, under the supervision of Prof Maria Graça Miguel and Prof. Bjorn Lindman. He also visited the University of Lund, Sweden for 3 months as a Socrates/Erasmus student, in which, under the supervision of Prof. Ulf Olsson, he worked in the same project, using different techniques as SAXS, Rheology, NMR self diffusion. Before joining the group in UCD he also spent 3 months at the University of Paris-Sud, France, studying the interaction of nanotubes and proteins, under the supervision of Prof. Dominique Langevin.
