Welcome message from Professor Joe Carthy, Director of UCD CCI

Professor Joe CarthyThe 21st century digital world, with its mobile connected devices, social media and cloud computing, has brought many innovations and benefits for communities and businesses. However, criminals use the same innovative technologies to commit crimes against ordinary citizens in the most insidious and corrupt ways. New kinds of cyber threat appear almost daily, making it a real challenge for law enforcement and industry to keep one step ahead of the criminals.

UCD’s Centre for Cybersecurity & Cybercrime Investigation (CCI) has been working at the forefront of hi-tech crime investigation, training and research for many years. During this time UCD CCI has worked closely with the Irish police force – An Garda Síochána – and over 30 partners from law enforcement, industry and academia worldwide on a range of education and research projects.

Since 2006, we have delivered MSc & CPD training to hundreds of police officers from over 60 countries, as well as staff from Interpol and Europol. Our graduates go on to train their colleagues and have a significant impact on their own countries’ fight against cybercrime. In addition to this, a large amount of training material developed under European Commission funded programmes and accredited by UCD is now available to law enforcement agencies in EU and applicant countries free of charge.

Our MSc programmes are unique in that they can be followed almost entirely by distance learning, with students only required to come to UCD for exams. With a modular structure and part-time options, students can combine study with full-time work and family commitments. The online classroom structure fosters and encourages close liaison between students, so graduates leave with an excellent international network of contacts for the future.

We are proud to be supporting and developing initiatives to harmonise cybercrime training across international borders and to be training highly qualified investigators to fight cybercrime on a worldwide basis.

We welcome enquiries about our courses and look forward to seeing you join our growing network of alumni worldwide.
