Research Theme 1: Intelligent Analytic Interfaces

The four current subthemes managed by researchers under the leadership of Dr. Brian Mac Namee at DIT in the Hosting phase of CeADAR under Research Theme 1 - Intelligent Analytic Interfaces are:

Research Theme: Ease of Interaction

This theme seeks to assist users in achieving the insights they require through intelligent analytic user interfaces and to encourage inquisitiveness.  The goal of this subtheme is to create innovative approaches and tools to aid non-analytics specialist users in exploring datasets and performing customer segmentations.  These tools should significantly improve how users can articulate and discover the insights they want.

One tool developed under this subtheme is:

SmartSeg:  A Customer Segmentation Tool

A state-of-the-art report about this topic is available here:  SOTA on Customer Segmentation

A state-of-the-art report about data-to-text technologies is available here:  SOTA on Data-to-Text

Research Theme: Beyond the Desktop

This theme seeks to assist users in exploring big datasets with more intuitive navigation and exploration methods.  The aim with this theme is to apply and develop ground-breaking ways of interacting with large complex data sets using more natural interfaces to discover new insights.

Research Theme: Changing User Behaviour based on Analytics

This theme will develop methodologies and techniques for modelling and incentivising specific user behaviours in complex scenarios using techniques from game theoretic mechanism design and investigate the effect of different communication options (for example, the levels of personalisation and context provided, and the use of different visualisation techniques).  These endeavours will be supported by the development of case-based reasoning tools to make personalised communication strategies for consumers.  The goal of this theme is to develop novel approaches, methodologies, techniques and tools to improve the likelihood that changes are made in end-user behaviour to achieve a desired outcome.

One tool developed under this subtheme is:

NudgeAlong:  A Tool to Change User Behaviour

A state-of-the-art report about this topic is available here:  SOTA on Changing User Behaviours

Research Theme: Passive analytics

This theme considers how to present the right results in the right medium at the right time to achieve a desired result including a level of personalisation of outputs for the end users and optimal learning of what a user needs based on their activity to date.  Outputs in this theme will be smart goal-directed interfaces which anticipate what an end-user needs.  The goal of this theme is to develop innovative tools and techniques to deliver results from background analytics processes in the most effective, timely, and targeted way using the most appopriate medium based on what is being communicated.

One tool developed under this subtheme is:

Passive Analytics : Customer Contact Assistance Tool
