CEMS provides courses that offer the knowledge and skills needed to deal with acute cardiac, trauma and paediatric emergencies. Participants include general practitioners, practice nurses, ambulance personnel and other healthcare professionals. The multi-disciplinary teaching faculty includes general practitioners, nurses, paramedics and advanced paramedics.

Upcoming Courses (Saturdays 9am - 5pm) | 6 external CPD (ICGP) points | €250 per course per day | €150 for a second GP or Practice Nurse from same practice.

Immediate Care Cardiac Course

The aim of the course is to provide participants with the clinical competence to manage life-threatening cardiac related emergencies in a pre-hospital setting. The course content is based on refreshing the participant’s knowledge of the chain of survival, the recognition and management of life threatening arrhythmias, the roles of individual team members in managing cardiac arrest and the administration of anti-arrhythmic and other cardiac medications. The course will focus on practical skills such as: - Management of life threatening emergencies

  • Integration of critical procedures in a simulated emergency situation
  • Basic and advanced airway management and oxygen therapy
  • Use of Automated Extenal Defibrillator

Immediate Care Trauma Course

This section equips the participant to manage trauma related life-threatening emergencies in a pre-hospital setting. The course content is a mixture of sessions dealing with the principles of management of serious trauma and participation on a range of skill stations. Much of the day is spent on skill stations allowing sufficient time for hands-on practice of skills and familiarisation with the equipment needed to manage and stabilise a trauma patient. The course is planned around road traffic accident procedures, planning and preparation. Concepts learned in this module are applicable to any trauma situation. The course will focus on practical skills such as:

  • Dealing with head injuries and the multi-system trauma victim
  • Primary and secondary patient surveys
  • Spinal Immobilisation
  • Airway management in a trauma patient
  • Fluid resuscitation
  • Close teamwork with the emergency services

Management of Anphylaxis in Primary Care

Since its introduction in early 2008, this course has attracted participants from a broad range of specialties including general practice, public health and the emergency services. A typica course would comprise the following:

Station 1:
(a) Management of Baby/Infant Allergic / Anaphylactic Reactions
(b) Management of Child Allergic / Anaphylactic Reactions

(a) Management of Adult Allergic Reaction
(b) Management of Adult Anaphylactic Reaction
Station 3:
(a) Drug calculations and preparation
(b) Auto-injector

Scenario One: 40-year-old man post H1N1 vaccination
Scenario Two: 30 year old lady know allergy to penicillin
Scenario Three: 7-year-old girl, peanut allergy.
Scenario Four: 3 year old boy, allergy unknown

The course is approved by the ICGP for CPD and by An Bord Altranais Cateogry 1 Post Registration approval
