Biographical Note:

Dr Gibbons returned to academia having worked for 11 years as a development worker in Ireland and overseas.  His first degree was in Agricultural Science.  After working for 3 years as an agricultural advisor in County Meath in the 1980s, he became active in rural development issues which prompted a change in profession.  He travelled to The Gambia, West Africa where he helped establish an Agricultural High School.  He then completed an MSc Agr. in Rural Development and worked as a Community Development Co-ordinator for a LEADER company in Counties Limerick and Cork.  In 1995 he returned to Africa as a technical advisor with the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs in Tanzania.  On his return to Ireland in 1998 he began a PhD programme while working to establish the Postgraduate Programme in Humanitarian Action.  He  successfully completed his PhD studies in 2003 and he is the Director of UCD's Postgraduate Programme in Humanitarian Action. He is also currently President of the Network on Humanitarian Assistance.
