Topic: “Role of Identity in Intra-State Transboundary River Water Conflicts: A Comparative Study of Select Indian Cases”

Doctoral Studies Panel: Prof. Jim Phelan (School of Agriculture & Food Science) – Chairperson; Dr Pat Gibbons (UCD Centre for Humanitarian Action); Dr. Shibashis Chatterjee (Dept. Of International Relations, Jadavpur University, visiting lecturer UCD-CHA); Anne Markey (UCD Centre for Humanitarian Action)

Biographical Note:

My research topic investigates the role of identity in intra- State transboundary river water conflict resolution process. Through a comparative study of three protracted conflict cases in India that are currently being adjudicated (rivers Cauvery, Krishna and Ravi Beas), the research explores how can existing intra-State transboundary river water conflict resolution mechanisms benefit from a greater understanding of identity issues in the conflict resolution process.

Previously, I completed my Bachelors (Hons.) in Political Science from Presidency College, Calcutta University. Subsequently I pursued a Masters in International Relations (specialization in Southeast Asia) at Jadavpur University and the NOHA Masters in International Humanitarian Assistance from Uppsala University. During the Masters at Jadavpur University, I was awarded the Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship which provided an opportunity to conduct a Masters research project on Inter State River Water Disputes: Institutions and Mechanisms. The NOHA Masters introduced me to challenges and issues of humanitarian action especially the dynamism of societies transitioning from emergency to development. It also gave me an opportunity to conduct an internship at DG ECHO as well as progress my research interest as a minor thesis on the role of ethnic identity in intra-State river water conflicts.

Before joining the UCD CHA in 2010, I was a researcher at Global Change Programme, Jadavpur University working on research projects on sustainable urban water use in Kolkata Municipal area.
