About Mass Spectrometry
Mass Spectrometry (MS) measures mass (m) to charge (z) ratio, i.e. (m/z).
Mass of a molecule can be categorised into two types: Exact Mass, where the sum of the most abundant mono-isotopic masses of component elements is counted and Molecular Mass, which sums the weighted averages of all the natural elements present in the molecule.
Generally the number of sites accessible for protonation [M+ H]+ or deprotonation [M- H]- determines the number of charges that a molecule can carry. Besides protonation, i.e. addition of H+ ion, adducts of pther cations (most commonly Na), are frequently seen in the electrospray mass spectra on positive ion mode.
