UCD School of Chemistry & Chemical Biology

Scoil na Ceimice agus na Ceimbhitheolaíochta UCD

Research

The School is very active in research. There are approximately 90 PhD students and 40 postdoctoral research associates in the School, working on a wide range of research projects spanning the whole of Chemistry from chemical physics to chemical biology.

In addition, there are many interdisciplinary projects involving collaborations with groups in other Schools in UCD, and with groups elsewhere in Ireland, and across the world.

Details of the research activities are contained in the staff pages, and further information is available for prospective PhD students and postdoctoral research associates. The results of this work are published in international journals with approximately seventy papers and review articles appearing from the School each year.

The research is carried out in well equipped laboratories in the Chemistry building. In Autumn 2005 the new building for the Centre for Synthesis and Chemical Biology opened and in December 2008 President Hugh Brady officially launched further state-of-the-art laboratories. The School has excellent research instrumentation. Highlights include five high field NMR spectrometers (300 to 600 MHz), excellent mass spectrometers, and a modern X-ray diffractometer. Details of our laboratories and instrumentation are provided in the research facilities page.
