UCD School of Chemistry & Chemical Biology

Scoil na Ceimice agus na Ceimbhitheolaíochta UCD

Welcome to the Teaching and Learning section of the School of Chemistry and Chemical Biology website.

Currently, at undergraduate level, the school offers two degree programmes, one in Chemistry and a second in Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology.

Chemistry:

The study of matter, its transformation and its application, is known as the central science.

A chemistry degree gives you the basis for understanding the principles that govern the composition of matter and the rules that dictate their conversions and applications.

Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology:

Involves the application of chemistry to biological and medicinal systems and will be important in the growing biotechnological production sector.

These applications are extremely widespread.

Some examples of areas chemists, medicinal chemists and chemical biologists are involved in;

  • the synthesis and application of new drugs and therapies
  • the production of nano-technological medical devices and sensors
  • investigating the underlying reactions in the atmosphere (climate change / ozone hole)
  • the production of molecular computers and new storage materials for computer hard disks
  • the generation of alternative sources of fuels and electricity
  • The generation of biological catalysts for synthetic reactions

For this reason chemists find employment in a very wide variety of industries.

About the Degrees

The modules which make up our degree programmes involve mixtures of lectures, small group tutorials and laboratory-based teaching.

In years 1 – 3 the laboratory sessions will be carried out in the school’s undergraduate laboratories, while in year 4 the laboratory work will be carried out in a staff member’s research laboratory.

In year 1 Dr Andrew Rous is responsible for the coordination of the laboratories and any queries you may have regarding the labs should be directed to Dr Rous, via the Chemistry School Office.

You can contact deirdre.murphy@ucd.ie (Tel: 01 716 2165).

For general information, entry requirements and modules required to progress in either of these degrees you should visit the following WebPages:
Chemistry
Medicinal Chemistry

Module descriptors are available here where you will find information regarding what you will learn, how you will be assessed and module timetabling.

Most modules have active Blackboard sites which house synopses of lecture notes and more detailed information on the topics covered in the module. These sites are available through your UCD connect site.

The UCD library also has a chemistry portal which provides access to useful websites and databases.

School Contacts

Any queries about the chemistry or chemical biology programmes should be directed via the school office administrative staff who will then be able to direct you to the relevant staff member to deal with your query. Pleae email chemistry@ucd.ie or telephone 01 716 2165/ 01 716 2881.

Staff members with main responsibility for these areas are:

Dr. James Sullivan
Dr. Francesca Paradisi
Dr. Andy Rous
