All civil engineering structures incorporate some contact with the ground.
Geotechnical Engineers determine how best to provide support for these structures.
Some of the designs carried out are:

  • Foundations for buildings;
  • Foundations for bridges and piers;
  • Dams;
  • Tunnels;
  • Embankments;
  • Floating offshore structures.

Civil engineers plan, design and build the foundations for these projects. The civil engineering programme at UCD includes a number of basic courses in geotechnical engineering Construction of a foundation for a railway bridge as well as an advanced course in the final year.
