New Archaeology Lecturer & Curator of the Classical Museum - Dr Joanna Day

We are delighted to welcome to the School our new archaeology lecturer and curator of the classical museum, Dr Jo Day, who will start in September. She will replace Dr Christina Haywood whom we are very sorry to lose. However we will still be working closely with Dr Haywood, as she is now the Director of the Irish Institute of Hellenic Studies at Athens.

Although born in Dublin, Dr Day grew up in Co. Laois. After attending King’s Hospital school, she studied Ancient History and Archaeology with French in Trinity College Dublin. She has an MA in Archaeology and Prehistory from the University of Sheffield and a PhD from TCD which was awarded in 2007. Her thesis examined the social roles of plants in the Bronze Age Aegean.

Her research interests include ancient gardens and the uses of plants in the past, ancient perfume production, and early ceramic technology.

Since 2007, she has worked on the excavation of the Irish Institute of Hellenic Studies at Athens at the site of Priniatikos Pyrgos in eastern Crete, where she directs the fieldschool and studies the Early Bronze Age pottery.
