This module is designed for postgraduate students who wish to learn Latin for the purposes of their research. Students will be introduced to the Latin language in its original Roman context. The fundamental rules of Latin and English grammar will be explained, and students will learn to read and translate passages adapted from ancient authors such as Cicero and Virgil. Students will also develop the skills they need to apply their knowledge of Latin in their research, by exploring issues in translating Latin and by becoming familiar with the range of lexical tools, commentaries and editions available for the study of Latin texts.
GRC40210 Beginners' Latin for Postgraduate Students 2
Credits 10 Level 4 Semester 2
Co-ordinator: Dr Helen Dixon
This module is the second step in our postgraduate introductory Latin course and students are expected to have previously taken Beginners' Latin for Graduate Students 1. Students will continue their study of the Latin language, developing their reading skills by translating short texts and adapted passages from a wide range of ancient Roman writers, such as Ovid and Catullus. By the end of the module, they will have acquired a solid learner's vocabulary and have met with all the key grammar and most common syntactical structures in Latin. Students will also continue to develop the skills they need to apply their knowledge of Latin to their research by studying a variety of approaches to Latin texts used by modern commentators and by writing a short commentary of their own.
