Biography:
I have been a lecturer in UCD since 1992. Having read Literae Humaniores at Somerville College, Oxford, I thought I had had enough of Latin and Greek. After working for Blackwell Publishing and then Copec Housing Trust in Birmingham however, I came across the dynamic Centre for Byzantine Studies run by Professor Bryer in the University of Birmingham. My knowledge of Greek was suddenly relevant giving me access to the world of the most beautiful churches I'd ever seen. Being fortunate enough to get funding for an MA in Byzantine studies, and then for a further four years when I completed my PhD on Socrates, the church historian, I then proceeded to rediscover the classical period through teaching an enormous range of topics here in UCD. I had been interested in how the rebellious early Christians had been written about by their historians and I then moved on to look at the descriptions of another group of rebels, slaves who took up arms against their masters. |
Research Interests
| My interest has always been in how people write history, in both antiquity and contemporary times. My MA thesis was an attempt to discover the reason behind the different representations of the bishop John Chrysostom. This led to my books on Socrates and Theodoret, both church historians. After seeing Gladiator, and then prompted by this, Spartacus, I wanted to discover how such a positive representation of a slave leader had emerged. This led to a general study of how slave revolts are described by historians, both ancient and modern. For future research I've two plans: one is to follow up the study of slaves to the late antique period, and the other is to look at how historians have described women such as Cleopatra. |
