Biography:
I have been a lecturer in UCD since 1992. Having read Literae Humaniores at Somerville College, Oxford, I thought I had had enough of Latin and Greek. After working for Blackwell Publishing and then Copec Housing Trust in Birmingham however, I came across the dynamic Centre for Byzantine Studies run by Professor Bryer in the University of Birmingham. My knowledge of Greek was suddenly relevant giving me access to the world of the most beautiful churches I'd ever seen. Being fortunate enough to get funding for an MA in Byzantine studies, and then for a further four years when I completed my PhD on Socrates, the church historian, I then proceeded to rediscover the classical period through teaching an enormous range of topics here in UCD. I had been interested in how the rebellious early Christians had been written about by their historians and I then moved on to look at the descriptions of another group of rebels, slaves who took up arms against their masters.
