Research Interests:
My interest has always been in how people write history, in both antiquity and contemporary times. My MA thesis was an attempt to discover the reason behind the different representations of the bishop John Chrysostom. This led to my books on Socrates and Theodoret, both church historians. After seeing Gladiator, and then prompted by this, Spartacus, I wanted to discover how such a positive representation of a slave leader had emerged. This led to a general study of how slave revolts are described by historians, both ancient and modern. For future research I've two plans: one is to follow up the study of slaves to the late antique period, and the other is to look at how historians have described women such as Cleopatra.
