GREEK 2012/13

We offer two Greek programmes: Greek Mode A is for students who have already studied Greek to Leaving Certificate level or equivalent; Greek Mode B is for beginners.

If you are interested in studying Greek, but are unsure as to which modules to take, you should get in contact with Professor Theresa Urbainczyk for further advice.

Erasmus and JYA students should also contact Professor Theresa Urbainczyk if they would like to study Greek during their time at UCD.

First year Greek for beginners (Mode B)

In first year, students should register for the two core modules GRK 10110 Ancient Greek Language for Beginners 1 and GRK 10120 Ancient Greek Language for Beginners 2. These are intensive introductory Greek language modules.

In addition, we recommend you take GRC 10120 Ancient Greece: An Introduction and GRC 10140 Classical Myth: An Introduction or GRC 10150 Classical Art: An Introduction. For further information on these module please click here.

First year Greek for students with leaving certificate Greek or equivalent (Mode A)

If you have already studied Greek, in first year you should register for the core module GRK 20010 Greek Grammar and Translation 1.

In addition, you must take at least one of GRK 20070 Greek Grammar and Translation 2, GRK 10070 Greek Texts: Euripides and GRK 10080 Greek Texts: Plato's Apology.

Can I take up beginners Greek at stage 2?

There are a limited number of elective places available for students who wish to take up Greek at Stage 2. This option may be of particular interest to students who are taking a major in Greek and Roman Civilization and wish to deepen their understanding of Ancient Greece.

Students should register for GRK 10110 Beginners' Greek 1 in the first instance, and can then progress to GRK 10120 Beginners' Greek 2 in the second semester.

The Beginners' course is fast-paced and intensive, so check that you can commit to coming to all the classes before enrolling. If you would like further advice on Greek modules, please contact Professor Theresa Urbainczyk.
