LATIN 2012/13

We offer two Latin programmes: Latin Mode A is for students who have already studied Latin to Leaving Certificate level or equivalent; Latin Mode B is for beginners.

If you are interested in studying Latin, but are unsure as to which modules to take, you should get in contact with Dr. Helen Dixon for further advice.

Erasmus and JYA students should also contact Dr. Dixon if they would like to study Latin during their time at UCD.

FIRST YEAR LATIN FOR BEGINNERS (Mode B)

In first year, students should register for the two core modules LAT 10110 Beginners’ Latin 1 and LAT 10120 Beginners’ Latin 2. These are intensive introductory Latin language modules.

In addition, we recommend you take GRC 10130 Ancient Rome: An Introduction and GRC 10140 Classical Myth: An Introduction or GRC 10150 Classical Art: An Introduction. For further information on these modules please click here.

FIRST YEAR LATIN FOR STUDENTS WITH LEAVING CERT. LATIN OR EQUIVALENT (Mode A)

If you have already studied Latin, in first year you should register for the core module LAT 10130 Intermediate Latin 1.

In addition, you must take at least one of LAT 10140 Intermediate Latin 2, LAT 20120 Cicero Pro Roscio and LAT 20130 Catullus.

CAN  TAKE UP BEGINNERS' LATIN AT STAGE 2?

There are a limited number of elective places available for students who wish to take up Latin at Stage 2. This option may be of particular interest to students who are taking a major in Greek and Roman Civilization and wish to deepen their understanding of the Roman world, or to students of linguistics, European languages, or medieval history and literature in Europe.

Students should register for LAT 10110 Beginners’ Latin 1 in the first instance, and can then progress to LAT 10120 Beginners’ Latin 2 in the second semester.

LAT 10130 Intermediate Latin 1 and LAT 10140 Intermediate Latin 2 complete the Beginners’ Latin programme and can be taken as electives in the student’s second year of studying Latin.

The Beginners’ course is fast-paced and intensive, so check that you can commit to coming to all the classes before enrolling. If you would like further advice on Latin modules, please contact Dr. Helen Dixon.
