Biography:
I have been working in the field of NMR spectroscopy for the last 15 years. I started my research career using a Varian 60 MHz electro magnet for the characterization and identification of antibacterial and insecticidal compounds from natural products at the University of Peradeniya, Srilanka. Then I moved to the University of Edinburgh to study the structural properties of Endothelin peptides using the then state of the art 600 MHz Varian spectrometer. Soon after completing my PhD degree at Edinburgh I accepted the NMR Scientist position at the UK national NMR centre. In 1999 I moved to the University College Dublin to start a new position at the Biological NMR centre in the Conway Institute where I still remain. Currently I serve as a Lecturer in the UCD School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science.I have keen interest on the NMR investigations and molecular modeling of biologically active peptides and its analogues. In addition my main research areas lie in the design and development of GIP and Endothelin receptor drugs, NMR studies of the metabolic functions of liver cells in different liver diseases, structure activity relationship studies of antimicrobial peptides for the development of new antimicrobial agents. Iam an author of more then 100 research articles, short communications and conference proceedings. I have also managed to secure funds from variety of research funding bodies.
