Research Interests
| My research focuses on transport and metabolism of amino acid and monoamine neurotransmitters in the brain and their association with neurodegenerative disease and drug-induced neurotoxicity. I am particularly interested in the role played by astrocytes in protection of neurons against glutamate-induced neurotoxicity and oxidative stress. My current work programme is aimed at understanding the role played by sulphur-containing amino acids in thiol redox balance and antioxidant defence mechanisms in glial cells. A particular focus is on regulation of the cystine-glutamate exchanger and the transulphuration pathway as sources of cysteine for glutathione in astrocytes and microglial cells. |
