Biography:
P. Ronan O'Connell is Professor of Surgery at University College Dublin, Ireland and Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at St Vincent's University Hospital (since 2007) and the Mater Misericordiae Hospital (1990-2007). Prof O'Connell graduated in 1979 from Dublin University and trained in Dublin, Cork and London. He completed specialist training in colon and rectal surgery at the Mayo Clinic, Minnesota, USA. Prof O'Connell was conferred with MD by thesis (1987) and he holds fellowships of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (1983) and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (Honorary) (2001).In 2008 he was elected to the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
Prof O'Connell is a member of the Irish Society of Coloproctology and the International Society of University Colorectal Surgeons. He is a fellow of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. He is secretary of the European Association of Coloproctology. He is an elected member of the Society of Pelvic Surgeons, the European Surgical Association and the International Surgical Group. He is a Council member of the Society of Academic and Research Surgeons.
Prof O'Connell has published widely in the areas of inflammatory bowel disease, pelvic floor physiology and continence. His reseach has been recognised by the Patey Prize (1986), the BJS prize at the Association of Coloproctology Great Britain and Ireland (1995, 1997, 1999 and 2007), best scientfic paper at the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (2007 and 2010) and best paper at the Physiological Society (2009).
Prof O'Connell is joint editor of Bailey and Love's Short Textbook of Surgery (25th edition) and the European Manual in Coloproctology, both published in 2008.He has been associate editor (1999-2002) and editor (2002-6) of the British Journal of Surgery, Associate Editor of Diseases of the Colon and Rectum (since 2001) and is on the editorial board of Colorectal Disease and Techniques in Coloproctology. He is editor in chief of the European Surgical Association since 2010.
Prof O'Connell has given Harry Bacon Lecture to the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (2003), the British Journal of Surgery Lecture to the German urgical Society (2005), the ESR Hughes Lecture to the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand (2007), the Sir Alan Parks' Lecture at St Mark's Hospital, London,(2007), the Sir Peter Freyer State of the Art Lecture at NUI Galway (2007) and the Robert Smith Lecture to the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (2009).
