Biography:

Studied mathematics, physics and medicine in Münster (Germany) and finished with a degree in medicine and physics in 1990
Did an MD in radiology in 1991 in Münster and a PhD in physics between 1992 and 1996 at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg
Became group leader at the EMBL in 1998
Became Stokes Professor at the UCD-Conway Institute in 2008

Predicted already in 1989 in course of the Diploma project in the physics department in Münster that electrospray could be an ion source for molecules of unlimited size
Helped to show how mass spectrometers can be used to identify and sequence peptides in a very sensitive way during the PhD project in Heidelberg
Was a major driver to demonstrate that the Tandem Affinity Purification method (TAP) invented by Bertrand Seraphin will make functional proteomics possible
Invented the modification of the TAP method to better use it in higher eukaryotic cells (iTAP method)
Demonstrated that parallel fragmentation of peptides can be used to screen for many peptide modifications simultaneously

Participation in the European research projects PRIMES (Protein interaction machines in oncogenic EGF receptor signalling) to investigate the role of static and dynamic protein networks in the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer (see http://www.ucd.ie/sbi/research/areasofresearch/sbicollaborativeprojects/primesfp7). This research is embedded into the research of the System Biology Ireland institute (see http://www.ucd.ie/sbi/).

Research Interests

I am currently working on a computer programme that allows to extract quantity information from all mass spectrometric investigations - even by following a molecule over several chromatographic runs.

The reason for this activity is that the important information of a mass spectrometric investigation in biological research is not any longer carried by the identity of a protein but by its quantitative trace.

We are investigating the static and dynamic protein complexes of the ERBB network in the context of the European PRIMES project (Protein interaction machines in oncogenic EGF receptor signalling). Its ultimate aim is to understand the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer (see http://www.ucd.ie/sbi/research/areasofresearch/sbicollaborativeprojects/primesfp7).
