Biography:
Professor Callanan is head of the Pathobiology and Infectious Disease Unit in the School of Agriculture, Food Science & Vetereinary Medicine. He is an accredited diagnostic and research pathologists with specialist interests in neuroinflammation, viral diseases and emerging novel disorders. A veterinary graduate of UCD, he initially 2 years as a housesurgeon, initially in UCD and then in the UNiversity of Glasgow. Follwing a five-year combined PhD/residency programme in the University of Glasgow he obtained his PhD (1994) and Membership of the Royal College of Pathologists (1996). He then worked with Sanofi-Winthrop (Northumberland UK) as a Toxicological Pathologist and in 1995 he returned to Ireland to work as a Research Officer in the Department of Agriculture & Food, Cork. He was appointed Lecturer in Veterinary Pathology at UCD in 1997, Senior Lecturer in 2002 and Associated Professor in 2005. His lecture topics include general pathology, immunopathology, cancer, cardiovascular disease and reproductive pathology. During this time he was appointed Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Pathologist (1999) and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists (2003). He is currently a member of the Examination Committee of both the Royal College of Pathologists and the European College of Veterinary Pathologists. He is involved in many research collaborations within UCD and runs his own research programme on feline immunodeficiency virus infection and a model of HIV-1 infection in man (SFI-funded). He also contributes to international (EU) programmes.
