1990-1991 Postdoctoral Researcher Department of Microbiology, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, USA
1990 Ph.D. Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences; University of Groningen, The Netherlands.
Professor Meijer graduated in 1986 from the University of Groningen, The Netherlands with an MSc in Biology. He obtained his PhD from the same University, following research on the physiology and molecular biology of autotrophic CO2 fixation. Following completion of his PhD in 1990, he joined the research team of Professor Tabita, Ohio Eminent Scholar at The Ohio State University, USA, to study the regulation of microbial gene expression at the molecular level. In 1991 Dr. Meijer was appointed as Lecturer in Microbiology at the University of Groningen, where he continued his research on the molecular biology and physiology of microbial metabolism and the regulation of gene expression.
Professor Meijer was appointed as Lecturer in the Department of Microbiology in 1997, University College Dublin. At present he is Associate Professor in the School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science in UCD. He is a principal investigator in the UCD Conway Institute and the Dublin Molecular Medicine Centre. He was appointed to the Special Graduate Faculty of the Department of Pathobiology of the University of Guelph, Canada in 2002.
Professor Meijer is currently member of the Editorial Board of the journal `Antonie van Leeuwenhoek¿ and was Associate Editor for the journal 'Microbiology' from 2001 to 2005. He was on the organizing committee of the 3rd International Symposium on Rhodococcus equi in the University of Washington 2002 and the 14th International Symposium on the Biology of Actinomycetes 2007 in Newcastle. At present he is an organizer of the 4th International Symposium on Rhodococcus equi to be held in Edinburgh (http://irec.bio.ed.ac.uk/Site/Havemeyer_workshop_08.html )In addition, he served on the Microbiology Committee of the Health Research Board, Enterprise Ireland and the European Union; He reviews papers and grant applications for a large number of journals and funding organizations.
