Featured Researcher: Dr Ciara O'Meara
My Research
I am currently working on the functional genomics of bovine embryo development in my role as a postdoctoral research fellow (Level II) in the Reproductive Biology Research Cluster (RBRC) funded under Science Foundation Ireland (SFI). More specifically, I am developing novel methods of introducing small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) into bovine oocytes and embryos. The aim of RNA interference technology is to silence specific genes of interest. Once the select gene is successfully targeted and knocked-down at the early stages of development, we can observe further embryonic developmental effects. Hence, we can then elucidate the function or importance of that gene in the early embryo. Techniques used include: transfection, microinjection and electroporation of cumulus oocyte complexes, zygotes and morula stage embryos.
