Cereer Path
1996: National Diploma in Fine Chemicals and Pharmaceutics from Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology
1999: Honours degree in Biochemistry from National University of Ireland Galway, including:
ERASMUS programme at the Physics department of the Ditaktiet Natuurkunde van de Universiteit van Amsterdam, Holland, working on the development of educational biochemistry experiments in conjunction with the IP-Coach software package for the introduction of eLearning in secondary schools.
LEONARDO and Aqua-TT programme with the Necton Micro-algae Research Group in Portugal, working on analytical techniques to identify the pigment profiles of micro-algae.
2005: PhD in Microbiology from the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre, BioScience Institute, National University of Ireland, Cork. Research included investigating the genetic and biochemical characterisation of prebiotic activities in Bifidobacterium breve. Joined UCD as a postdoctoral fellow working on a Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) funded project on the oral delivery of novel mucoadhesive polymeric peptide conjugates.
2008: Joined SFI Strategic Research Cluster funded research programme, the ‘Drug Delivery Network Ireland’, working on the development of oral and pulmonary drug delivery systems of therapeutic peptides.
Current research
Working on SFI Strategic Research Cluster funded research programme, the ‘Irish Drug Delivery Network’, which involves:
- Improvement and analysis of unstable therapeutics for drug delivery
- Development of an oral delivery system for salmon calcitonin by site specific PEGylation and complexation with novel comb shaped polymers for the treatment of osteoporosis
Other research interests
The identification and development of potential polymeric therapeutics for treatment of human inflammatory joint disease.
