Introduction

INTENTS (Intelligent Navigation Tools for hyper documents) is a 3-year project in the Department of Computer Science, UCD, funded by Forbairt’s Software Programme in Advanced Technology and the National Software Directorate. It is part of CoSEI (Computer Science and English Initiative), a programme set up by the Departments of Computer Science and English in UCD to foster collaboration between the two departments in the application of computers in the humanities.

The goal of the INTENTS project is the design of a suite of intelligent knowledge-based tools to assist in the construction, navigation and management of hypertext documents. One of these tools will semi-automatically create a conceptual structure of a document corpus and exploit domain knowledge and knowledge of the user to provide a framework which may be exploited by an intelligent hypertext browser. Another tool will be the browser itself, which will be knowledge-based and designed to use metadata produced by other tools in the suite. Other tools will include document management tools, document authoring tools and tools which will try to learn from user behaviour, perhaps by building a conceptual model of the user.

The next five sections outline various aspects of the project which it hopes to investigate during the lifetime of the project.
