PhD Training Workshop
Bas Boots and Christina Hazard participated in "Soil Ecology: Crossing the frontier between below- and above-ground" at Wageningen University, Netherlands between 5-9 February 2007. This international PhD soil ecology workshop organized by several research schools in the Netherlands consisted of five days dedicated to the education and exploration of soil ecology via presentations, discussions, a debating session and small group meetings. The course presentations were given by leading researchers in their area of speciality. Presentations were followed by 30 minute discussion sessions. A debating session required students to choose from a selection of controversial topics and were either defended or challenged in front of an audience. Small group meetings allowed students within the same specific field of soil ecology to gather and present their research in exchange for comments and criticism. This proved to be very useful. The workshop offered a fresh look on current soil ecology research from different perspectives. Interaction with leading researchers led to interesting conversations and debates. Comments on our proposed work were very positive from both attending students and participating leading researchers.
Nematode Symposium
Aidan Keith attended the "1 st International Symposium on Nematodes as Environmental Bioindicators" at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, between 11-13 June 2007. He presented a poster titled "CréBeo: the distribution, diversity and indicator value of nematodes in Irish soils".
Earthworm Research Meeting
Olaf Schmidt attended the "UK and Irish Earthworm Researchers Meeting" at the Natural History Museum, London, on 18 September 2007. The title of his plenary talk was "Current earthworm research in Ireland".
IEEM Conference
Olaf Schmidt will attend the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (IEEM) conference "Irish Biodiversity – Countdown to 2010" on 15 October 2007 in Dublin and present a poster on CréBeo.
