Event: British Biophysical Society Irish Lecture Tour
Date: November 12, 2009
Time: 16:00
Venue: UCD Conway Institute, University College Dublin
As part of the established annual lecture series, the British Biophysical Society is currently organizing an Irish Lecture Tour. This year Professor Helen Saibil FRS, Bernal Professor of Structural Biology, distinguished world class scientist (http://people.cryst.bbk.ac.uk/~ubcg16z/), from the Birkbeck College, University of London will give series of lectures at UCC, UCD and Queens at Belfast. It is scheduled that Prof. Saibil will present her lecture titled “CRYO ELECTRON MICROSCOPY OF CHAPERONE MACHINES” at 4pm on 12th November at the UCD Conway Institute.
Professor Saibil’s research interests are the development and application of novel biophysical methods to biological and biomedical problems. Her main interests are in analysing conformational changes in macromolecular machines, using cryo-electron microscopy and image processing. Her cryo-EM analysis of the structure and movements of the E. coli chaperonin has elucidated the allosteric mechanism of this protein folding machine. Another major interest is in studies of the conformational changes in membrane pore formation by bacterial toxins and in immune defence. She is a member of EMBO and was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2006 and of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2009. She is the author of number of very interesting scientific papers.
