About Mass Spectrometry
Mass Spectrometry (MS) measures mass (m) to charge (z) ratio, i.e. (m/z).
Mass of a molecule can be categorized into two types: Exact Mass where the sum of the most abundant mono-isotopic masses of component elements is counted and Molecular Mass which sums the weighted averages of all the natural elements present in the molecule.
Generally the number of sites accessible for protonation [M+ H]+ or deprotonation [M- H]- determines the number of charges that a molecule can carry. Besides protonation, i.e. addition of H+ ion, adducts of other cations (most commonly Na), are frequently seen in the electrospray mass spectra on positive ion mode.

Instrumentation
The following two mass spectrometers (Micromass/Waters Corp. USA)
- Quattro microTM LC-MS/MS (fully automated for normal mass screening)
- Liquid chromatography time-of-flight (LCT) mass spectrometer
Both these instruments are equipped with electrospray source and have HPLC online to the ES source.

We also have the following GC/MS equipment.
- GCT premier equipped with Electron Impact (EI),Chemical Ionisation(CI) and Direct Chemical Ionisation (DCI) probe.
- Thermo Finnigan TraceGC/MS

GCT Premier GC/MS
Thermo Finnigan Trace GC/MS
For higher molecular weight analysis we have a MALDI ToF.
