Science Speak '08

Following on from his success in the the UCD Conway AccesScience competition with his presentation on ‘The Nature of Chemistry’, Billy Fleming of the CSCB represented UCD at the annual SCIENCE SPEAK competition in the RDS on the evening of April 30. Billy spoke about the advances being made in the lab to synthesise molecules used in drug therapies in an environmentally friendly way. Billy was placed 3rd in the competition and 1st place went to Suzanne McEndoo from UCC for her talk 'Calculations with Quantum Whirlpools'.

SCIENCE SPEAK 2008 once again saw the seven Irish Universities battle it out for the coveted first prize. The challenge for the PhD researchers is to
explain their research to a lay audience using ordinary language without the
technical jargon.

Mr Pat Kenny of RTÉ was the compère for the evening with Mr Peter Brabazon of Forfás’ Discover Science and Engineering programme, Mr Dick Ahlstrom of The Irish Times, Ms Evelyn Cusack of Met Éireann, Ms Emma O’Kelly of RTÉ and Mr Robert Fossett of Fossett’s Circus forming the judging panel. Minister Mary Hanafin presented the prizes to the lucky winners.

The importance of this event cannot be overemphasised with the ongoing national need to promote science as a viable and important career choice and also its relevance to everyday life generally.

This event is organised by Irish Universities Promoting Science and supported by the RDS, the Irish Times, Discover Science & Engineering and Wyeth Biotech at Grange Castle, Dublin.
