The inaugural Irish NMR Meeting, organised by CSCB and UCD Conway fellow Dr Chandralal Hewage, took place on 7th May 2009 at the UCD Conway Institute of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science. The aim of this meeting was to provide an opportunity for scientists working with NMR in Ireland to get together to discuss recent advances in the field of NMR technology. Biological NMR has played a major role at UCD for more than two decades and Structural Biology is now one of the main thematic research areas of the School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science at UCD.

Sabrina Devereux, a 3rd year PhD student with Dr Francesca Paradisi of the Centre for Synthesis and Chemical Biology, UCD Conway Institute and UCD School of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, came 2nd overall with her talk entitled “What a Waste???”. Sabrina’s work centres on finding ways to deal with the 91,000 tonnes of solid waste generated from prepared potatoes in Ireland each year; enough to fill 1,200 Boeing 737 airplanes. The audience vote judged Sabrina best out of the 7 speakers.
