Understanding Your Diploma
Sport has never been as globally significant as it is in the twenty-first century, and this innovative programme responds to teh growing importance of sport, exercise and physical activity at the local, national and international level. As a result of changing social and economic factors, health and lifestyle concerns and a trend towards commercialisation and professionalisation, the sport and exercise industry now offers a wide range of challenging career opportunities.
The multidisciplinary nature of the Diploma in Sports Mangement equips students with competencies in areas such as management, marketing, human resources, development and coaching, with each underpinning the structure and governance of sport today. The combination of UCD's internationally recognised academic excellence and sporting reputation makes it well suited to those wishing to join this burgeoning industry.
This is a two-year, part time programme, organised across four semesters. Students register for three modules per semester, and all lectures occur on Mondays from 9am to 5pm.
Aims of the Programme
The Diploma in Sports Management is intended for school leavers, sports scholarship holders, mature students and high-calibre athletes, all with a keen interest in sport and its organisation. Some who select this programme may intend using the qualification to gain employment within the industry, whilst others will view it as a means to transferring to the BSc in Sport and Exercise Management. Those who are already employed in the industry can register for this programme to deepen their knowledge of sport and its management, whilst others already in employ may use the Diploma to facilitate a career change into the sports sector.
Consquently, the programme aims to:

Provide a foundation for a career in sports management related industries.

Expand the academic knowledge and business skills of those already active or employed in the sports industry.
Admissions Requirements
This programme has a limited number of places and applicants must be of matriculation standard, or its equivalent, with a minimum of two Honours and a B3 LC Ordinary Paper in Mathematics. Ideally applicants would have a background in sport, either as a coach, competitor, volunteer or administrator, or have an interest in sport and a view to a career in this industry. Interviews may be held to assess applicants and their suitability for this programme. Special consideration may be given to applicants who have been offered a UCD sports scholarship. Mature age applicants are encourage to apply, and special consideration may be given to elite level athletes and coaches.
Application Procedure
This is non-CAO programme, and applications are completed online (www.ucd.ie/apply). Whilst a minimum of matriculation standard is required, places are competitive and most students would tend to have substantially higher grades.

As UCD is the first university to offer a Diploma in Sports Management, students will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in a wide range of careers in the sports industry.
Such opportunities include:

Sports Development Officers/Sports Activity Co-ordinators within the various National Governing Bodies of Sport, Local Authorities and Local Sports Partnerships.

Facility/Event/Operations Managers within sports organisations.
